HVAC Service Technician job overview

HVAC service technicians specialize in installing, maintaining, and repairing HVAC equipment, indoor air quality, and pneumatic control systems. Working conditions and responsibilities will vary every day. Duties include meeting with customers at their homes or business to perform customer-requested work orders, preventative maintenance checks, warranty services, and emergency repairs. They are responsible for troubleshooting, testing equipment, diagnosing, and fixing various HVAC system components, including air conditioners, furnaces, thermostats, compressors, boilers, and chillers. HVAC service technicians use a company truck to visit job sites.

We are looking for a personable, experienced HVAC service technician who loves to problem solve to join our team. You’ll be responsible for a variety of work orders, visiting homes and businesses to work on HVAC, indoor air quality, refrigeration, and control systems. The ideal candidate has the technical skills to identify and isolate problems, is familiar with using hand and power tools, and has strong communication skills to explain what needs to be repaired, replaced, or installed, and why. HVAC Service Technician responsibilities
  • Perform maintenance and installation of HVAC equipment in homes and businesses
  • Diagnose and repair HVAC problems, including component installation and replacement
  • Estimate costs of installation, repairs, and services to customers
  • Complete preventative maintenance and warranty services for customers
  • Read and apply electrical schematics, diagrams, blueprints, and wiring diagrams
  • Test newly installed components to ensure proper function
  • Maintain records of completed projects and parts used
HVAC Service Technician qualifications
  • High school diploma or GED required
  • Certification or associate’s degree from an HVAC program at a technical school or 1+ years experience in the field as an HVAC helper or equivalent
  • EPA 608 refrigerant recovery certification required
  • Must have required state and local HVAC technician licenses
  • Current driver’s license and clean driving record
  • Ability to lift 50 lbs or 100 lbs with aid
  • The candidate must have excellent problem-solving and communication skills, and a can-do attitude
