Legal Accountant

Legal Accountant job overview

A legal accountant maintains a law firm’s financial information. They process accounts payable and receivable, reconcile general ledgers, and prepare all financial statements, including balance sheets, tax returns, income statements, disbursements accounting, and profit and loss statements. A legal accountant is also in charge of processing client billing, closing out each month, tax preparation, and assisting with the year-end audit. They should also know how to process payroll, as well as how to prepare W-2’s and 1099’s. This position is privy to personal, firm, and client financials, so maintaining strict confidentiality is crucial. A legal accountant typically works full-time for a law firm, but can also work for a corporation or non-profit organization.

Legal Accountant responsibilities
  • Reconcile general ledgers, prepare financial transaction reports such as income and loss statements, balance sheets, and account reconciliations
  • Prepare staff and attorney payroll, run annual W-2’s and 1099’s, and prepare tax filings
  • Process accounts receivable and accounts payable and run monthly client invoices
  • Assist in our year-end audit with financial reporting and analysis
  • Respond to client and staff inquiries concerning invoices
Legal Accountant qualifications
  • High school diploma or equivalent, plus some college is preferred - bachelor’s degree is a plus
  • At least 5 years of law firm accounting experience or bookkeeping or related field experience at an accounting firm
  • Exceptional knowledge of generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP) and accounting procedures
  • Proficient in MS Excel, data entry, and accounting software
  • Can maintain strict confidentiality when handling financial data
