Construction Building Inspector responsibilities
  • Analyze blueprints and building plans to be sure they meet contract specifications, local building code ordinances, electrical code safety standards, and zoning regulations
  • Conduct land surveys to determine leveling, alignment, and elevation of structures on worksites
  • Utilize test equipment, survey instruments, and metering devices to perform a thorough inspection of construction projects
  • Perform a thorough building inspection for structural soundness, including heating systems, air conditioning, roofing, foundation, sewer, electrical systems, hoists, escalators, and plumbing systems
  • Monitor construction sites through all phases of construction and assure construction activities meet conformance to general public safety standards
  • Issue stop-work orders and violation notices to construction sites when needed, approve satisfactory plans, issue permits, and produce written inspection reports
  • Maintain detailed and accurate daily logs and photos for inspection recordkeeping
Construction Building Inspector qualifications
  • A high school diploma is required - some college or technical education is attractive in the area of building inspection technology, engineering, construction management, or construction technology
  • 2-3 years of construction industry experience is desired working with construction trades as a plumbing inspector, real estate home inspector, or mechanical inspector
  • Current building inspector certification through the International Code Council (ICC)or similar association is highly desired, but not required
  • Valid driver’s license with a satisfactory driving record is needed
  • Familiarity with inspection techniques, zoning regulations, construction methods, and state and local safety regulations and ordinances is crucial
  • Mechanical knowledge, strong decision making, and communication skills are essential
