Construction Estimator job overview

A construction estimator gathers, analyzes, and prepares detailed total cost information to maximize cost-effectiveness during the construction process. They visit construction sites to gather necessary client requirement information and analyze proposals, specifications, blueprints, and construction documents to thoroughly understand the project. They work closely with construction project managers to coordinate and oversee the vendors and subcontractors bid process. The construction estimator then determines the time, labor, construction materials, and product costs for construction projects and communicates these requirements to clients. A construction estimator works in an office environment, with occasional construction site visits, and typically works with construction and development companies.

Construction Estimator responsibilities
  • Visit construction sites to obtain necessary client requirement information
  • Evaluate proposals, specifications, blueprints, and construction documents to understand the project as a whole
  • Work closely with the construction project manager to oversee and coordinate the bid process for vendors and subcontractors
  • Estimate time, labor, construction materials, and product costs to determine overall cost for construction projects
  • Produce written proposals, cost estimates, budgets, and updates for clients and project managers
  • Provide accurate and clear quantity takeoff information to provide a detailed list of materials and assess the total construction costs
  • Follow up with clients on submitted proposal and budgets
Construction Estimator qualifications
  • Bachelors’ degree in civil engineering, accounting, construction management, or related field is required
  • Certified Professional Estimator (CPE) certification from the American Society of Professional Estimators (ASPE) is preferred
  • Minimum 3 years of experience in the construction industry - project estimating or construction management is needed
  • Understanding of accounting, data and risk analysis, research methodology, and estimation metrics is vital
  • Proficient in MS Office (Word, Excel, and PowerPoint) and construction estimating software
  • Requires critical thinking, analytical skills, and very strong math skills
  • Stellar communication, project management, and time-management skills are crucial
