Insurance underwriting assistants work alongside insurance underwriters or underwriting managers to collect information, perform data entry, analyze risk factors, and more to determine the cost and benefit ratio associated with insuring prospective clients. Additional job duties include supporting the underwriting process for claims by maintaining accurate records and modifying existing policies. They most often do this by acquiring statistical and financial information that the underwriting department can leverage to make educated policy decisions. An assistant underwriter works full-time or part-time for insurance agencies, insurance companies, and corporate business entities.

Insurance Underwriting Assistant responsibilities
  • Correspond with applicants via phone, email and in person to collect and analyze insurance information that facilitates the risk assessment process and provides underwriting support
  • Document and communicate policy approvals or rejections to the underwriting team, insurance agents, supervisors, and clients in a timely manner
  • Compile data and analytics for reports that can advise insurance policy guidelines and whether coverage should be provided
  • Serve as the liaison for underwriters and customers in order to track, manage, and prioritize insurance applications and other services
  • Maintain accurate, up-to-date records within underwriting software programs by verifying all documents for accuracy and completion in order to provide sound policy recommendations to prospective and existing customers
Insurance Underwriting Assistant qualifications
  • Must have a bachelor’s degree in mathematics, statistics, business administration, or other related field
  • Some years of experience working in the insurance industry or as an administrative assistant, or a related job is a plus
  • Designation as a Chartered Property Casualty Underwriter (CPCU) preferred but not required
  • Strong attention to detail to ensure the accurate collection of information and entry into databases
  • Stellar communications and interpersonal skills
