An insurance billing representative or billing clerk is responsible for maintaining billing records, documentation, and other financial information for companies and their clients. They are required to prepare invoices, reconcile billing by overseeing outstanding balances and assessing unpaid claims, expedite the billing process to ensure timely payment, research denials and resubmit claims, as needed, conduct billing audits, and compile reports. Insurance billing representatives may also be tasked with various administrative duties such as retrieving documents from client files to generate claim forms. Insurance Billing Representative responsibilities
  • Review client bills for accuracy and completeness and proactively obtain any missing payer information for inclusion
  • Post adjustments, transfer of responsibility, and refunds, when needed, and update accounting records accordingly
  • Prepare invoices, reconcile billing, compile reports and other documents using billing software, and field related questions from internal teams and customers
  • Submit insurance claims and follow up on unpaid, rejected, or denied claims to resolve and resubmit when required
  • Answer all client questions related to account status, activity, and outstanding charges
Insurance Billing Representative qualifications
  • High school diploma/GED or equivalent required, associate degree in business, finance, or a related field preferred
  • General understanding of accounting, billing, collections, and finance fundamentals is necessary
  • Proficiency with financial management software is needed for this role
  • Experience working in accounts receivable billing, or insurance, or as a customer service representative or data entry specialist is a plus
  • Must have strong problem-solving skills and the ability to research to rectify collections, discrepancies, and denials
  • Results-oriented with a proven track record of meeting firm deadlines
  • Exemplary communication, organization, and math skills are essential to excel at working effectively with clients and ensuring accuracy in billing
