Dental Hygienist

Dental Hygienist job overview

A dental hygienist works closely with dentists and is mainly responsible for performing dental cleanings. They ensure patients are comfortable and prepared for their appointments, sterilize dental equipment, check for signs of cavities and gingivitis, remove excess plaque and tartar from teeth, and apply preventative sealants like fluoride. Additional duties may include taking dental impressions, operating x-ray machines, and working with dentists to determine diagnoses, and keeping up-to-date documentation of patient visits. Dental hygienists work in a dental office.

Dental Hygienist responsibilities
  • Talk to patients and make sure they feel comfortable and taken care of before, during, and after the examination
  • Clean dental instruments to ensure everything is sterilized properly
  • Perform preliminary dental examinations to get an overview of the patient’s oral health history for the dentist
  • Look for signs of gum disease, infections, or cavities to ensure issues are caught early and can be treated
  • Remove plaque and apply fluoride or other sealants to prevent cavities and tooth decay
  • Explain good oral hygiene techniques to patients of all ages, such as thorough brushing and flossing twice daily
  • Provide post-operative health education to patients so they can take practice good dental care at home after procedures
  • Create dental impressions of patients’ teeth so veneers, mouthguards, etc. can be made correctly
  • Take x-ray images of the patients’ teeth to help dentists identify any oral health issues like cavities
  • Work with dentists to decide the best form of treatment for a variety of dental disease
  • Keep detailed records of each patient’s visit and update their health history
Dental Hygienist qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree or master's degree in registered dental hygiene program preferred, associate’s degree required
  • At least 1-2 years of experience in dental hygiene
  • Has dental hygienist licensure in the state where the job is located
  • Current CPR certification
  • Understands HIPAA regulations and all dentistry safety guidelines
  • Able to stand up for long periods of time to administer dental exams and procedures
  • Strong communication skills, interpersonal skills, and customer service skills
