Behavioral therapists work with patients who have been diagnosed with mental disorders or with clients who are attempting to overcome personal challenges or change behaviors. Responsibilities include assessing patient condition, fostering positive behavior, minimizing negative habits, monitoring progress, and helping improve patients' lives by creating individualized plans that meet their needs. Counseling knowledge, patience, strong communication and interpersonal skills, and an approachable personality are required for the position. They often work in a clinical setting working one-on-one with patients or in group therapy scenarios, and must possess licensure as a clinical social worker (LCSW) for the state where they reside.

Behavioral Therapist responsibilities
  • Assess client needs and build customized solutions for behavior issues while establishing individual targets and goals
  • Develop treatment plans based on the patient's values, goals, and health using comments from the patient's treatment team and support system
  • Utilize evidence-based methods to provide group and individual treatment to patients and families
  • Prepare patient documentation and communicate pertinent clinical information to the patient, referring provider, and treatment team
  • Conduct phone wellness checks on a regular basis to enquire about behavioral health and medication compliance from patients
Behavioral Therapist qualifications
  • High school diploma or GED and a bachelor’s degree in counseling, social work, or equivalent
  • Current and unrestricted state license as an LCSW (licensed clinical social worker) or equivalent
  • A minimum of 1-3 years of experience in a clinical setting working in behavioral health
  • CPR and BLS (Basic Life Support) certifications are required
  • Possess excellent analytical and problem-solving skills, and great communication and interpersonal skills
