An estate planning attorney advises clients on issues related to how wealth and property are dispersed upon someone's death. The primary responsibility of the estate planning attorney is to consult with clients to determine their wishes and prepare required documents such as wills, trusts, powers of attorney, and health care directives. Legal aspects of estate planning may include knowledge of family law, taxation law, inheritance law, as well as concerns of community property, joint ownership, and charitable contributions. A Juris Doctor degree from an accredited law school is required for this position. You must also take and pass the state bar exam in the state where you intend to practice.
