Regional Engineer – Michigan

Ducks Unlimited, Inc., the world’s leading wetland and waterfowl conservation organization, is seeking a self-motivated, experienced civil engineer to be located in Dexter, Michigan. The successful applicant will join a highly motivated conservation team of biologists and engineers who are responsible for the planning, design, and construction of wetland restoration and enhancement projects. Primary responsibilities will be in Michigan and Ohio.

Responsibilities

Regional Engineers perform a full range of project planning, design, contracting, and construction management functions on the wetland, riparian, and associated habitat restoration projects. Project delivery responsibilities include scoping and proposal development, engineering design, project bidding, field inspection, and occasional construction management. A close working relationship with local, state, and federal personnel, private landowners, and other conservation partners will be an important aspect of the job. The position will include occasional travel.

  • Prepare proposal scope of work and budgets in close coordination with biological staff.
  • Interpret, select, adapt, and apply engineering, surveying, and construction management principles and practices across a range of engineering services within a diverse conservation program.
  • Complete engineering designs and reports as required.
  • Prepare project plans, technical specifications, and cost estimates. Attend project meetings.
  • Conduct field inspection and perform construction management oversight as needed.
  • Ensure that consultants and contractors adhere to project plans, specifications, and schedules.
  • Act as a contracting officer and ensure contract compliance and manage project budgets.
  • Assist with occasional fieldwork as required which could include strenuous outdoor activity in difficult environmental conditions.   
  • Must be able to operate ATV and outboard boats when necessary.

Qualifications

  • Candidates must have at minimum, a B.S in Civil Engineering or an equivalent degree from an EAC/ABET-accredited engineering program, be a registered professional engineer, and a minimum of 6 years of experience in civil engineering design.
  • The applicant will need to obtain registration in assigned states.
  • Desirable qualifications include experience with Civil3D, hydrology, hydraulics, civil design including structures and pump stations, erosion control, construction inspection, and project management. 
  • Demonstrated oral, written and interpersonal communication skills are essential.
  • Candidates must be self-motivated, goal-oriented, and able to work with and solve problems in close team-based relationships.
