Do you want to work with a boutique, dynamic, woman-of-color-owned, full-service intellectual property law firm from the comfort of your own home, while helping game-changing entrepreneurs use their intangible assets to build a financial legacy?

We are an entrepreneurial intellectual property firm that is on track for aggressive growth and we need an experienced IP paralegal to join our team and work directly with the firm’s founder/managing attorney and other attorneys to support the team and help clients.

We want to be known for helping our clients leverage their IP to make more money for their families and legacies overall. Because what’s more empowering than calling the shots of your own destiny? We are growing fast and need a paralegal who can hit the ground running.

ABOUT THE JOB:
This is a full-time job where you are expected to oversee and manage our IP portfolio, so you absolutely must be available 40 hours a week. This is an exempt, salaried position. Salary commensurate with experience. We offer contributions towards your health insurance, and unrestricted PTO, and are completely remote (meaning we don’t care if you’re in San Diego or not). The position requires adherence to the firm’s hours, which means 8 am – 5 pm pacific time. If you are outside our time zone, but willing to work our time zone’s hours, that is acceptable. The first 90 days are not subject to any company benefits.

TO APPLY:
Please provide and resume and a cover letter of no more than TWO paragraphs and a closing sentence. In the first paragraph, explain what you believe are the most important qualities needed in someone who works with intellectual property clients and why you believe they are the most important qualities. In the second paragraph, explain why you applied to this particular ad. As a closing sentence, please write, “I have read the instructions contained in the job posting and followed the instructions.”

DO NOT SEND YOUR RESUME THROUGH THIS WEBSITE. Email your resume and cover letter in PDF format to hello@trestlelaw.com. The subject line of the email should be your last name in ALL CAPS, followed by the position you’re applying for in lower case, followed by one word that you would use to describe yourself in ALL CAPS. [example: SMITH paralegal AWESOME]

APPLICATIONS RECEIVED THROUGH THIS SYSTEM/WEBSITE THAT DO NOT FOLLOW INSTRUCTIONS WILL NOT BE CONSIDERED

Responsibilities

THE POSITION WILL BE RESPONSIBLE FOR IMPORTANT WORK, INCLUDING:

  • Case file setup and management.
  • Client coordination and communication.
  • Assisting attorneys with initial clearance searches and preparing draft template letters for attorney review.
  • Organize and maintain all dockets across company platforms.
  • General support to attorneys including scheduling, filing, compiling, analyzing, proofreading, reproducing, and distributing correspondence.
  • Stay up to date on global IP trends, brand protection, and enforcement.
  • Manage global trademark prosecution practice, including liaising with international counsel when needed.
  • Prepare and file copyright applications with the copyright office.
  • Manage timelines, scheduling, and response deadlines for the firm’s IP portfolio.
  • Keeping cases moving forward.
  • Coordination with supervising attorneys to ensure work is completed and managed appropriately.
  • Coordinate with outside patent counsel to assist in the upkeep of scheduling and client expectations.

IF YOU HAVE THESE SKILLS AND THE BELOW STATEMENTS APPEAL TO YOU, THEN YOU MIGHT BE OUR NEXT PARALEGAL!

  • You are an IP nerd and love learning about all aspects of intellectual property.
  • You are someone who enjoys organizing and systems and is not afraid to provide input to make the company better where needed.
  • You are a “roll up your sleeves” kind of person and can shift gears to help out where necessary (copying/faxing are not beneath you).
  • You are amazing at scheduling with a sickening degree of attention to detail.
  • You’re great with calendars, email, spreadsheets, word processing, the internet, the USPTO website, the copyright office’s website, and are a fast learner of third-party software.
  • You are familiar with Clio, AltLegal, Zapier, ConvertKit, Loom, the USPTO, Copyright.gov, Microsoft Office (Word, Outlook, Excel, PowerPoint) (not requirements, but preferred)
  • While we love to help people learn and grow, we are currently not able to hire a paralegal who is just out of school with little experience. We need an experienced paralegal in the intellectual property field. The ideal candidate will be able to take initiative on work that needs to be done and complete tasks with minimal handholding.

Qualifications

  • 2+ years of previous intellectual property experience required
  • Trademarks and patent experience
  • Hyper-organized and detail-oriented
  • Ability to work with computer systems well and quickly
  • Virtual law firm experience a plus
  • Knows Excel, Word, and Outlook
  • This is not a "siloed" law firm, where you only work on a certain kind of project. This is a law firm that handles IP and business matters, so you will need to be flexible and a good writer.

Compensation
$40,000-$60,000 DOE
