At Homeward Bound of WNC, we rely on our Finance team to help ensure the fiscal health of the organization in working to fulfill our mission to prevent and end homelessness in our community through permanent housing and support. We are seeking a detail-oriented Finance Associate to assist our Finance Team with day-to-day financial operations, grant administration, and special projects. The Finance Team currently consists of a Bookkeeper, a Grant Accountant, and the Director of Finance & Operations, who administer a budget of $8-$9M spread across 8 functional departments. The largest source of income for Homeward Bound is reimbursable grants, which require stringent tracking and reporting. Homeward Bound generates approximately 300 grant draws per fiscal year. In this role, a successful individual should possess in-depth knowledge of best practices in financial management and experience in a similar environment. An outstanding associate will be someone whose expertise results in accurate financial reporting and efficient account management. 

Schedule and compensation: This is a part-time, non-exempt (hourly) position with a flexible, “as-needed” work schedule of up to 25 hours per week. There are limited opportunities for remote work. Starting pay up to $18.00/hour depending on experience. This position is not eligible for benefits coverage. This position works collaboratively with all other team members and reports to the Director of Finance and Operations.  

Responsibilities

  • Train to be able to support and occasionally serve as lead for customary day-to-day accounts payable and accounts receivable functions (accurate data entry, back-up review, check and direct deposit payments, making and recording remote deposits)
  • Assist Grant Accountant with assembling grant draw packets and maintaining accurate Excel-based projection sheets and required supporting documentation
  • Help to maintain file structures and naming conventions among financial support documents and accurate vendor and customer accounts in accounting software
  • Assist with the preparation of operating budgets, financial statements, and reports as needed
  • Assist with annual independent and single audits and periodic internal desk audits
  • Conduct bank reconciliations, maintain filing, and other special projects as needed
  • Review program guidance for enhancing policy and procedure development to help ensure regulatory compliance across all funding sources

Qualifications

  • Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree in Finance/Accounting, Business Administration, or related degree program; appropriate certifications and hands-on experience considered
  • Proven work experience in Finance or Grants Management fields
  • Experience with financial software - Homeward Bound uses Quickbooks
  • Knowledge of basic accounting standards and fiscal procedures
  • Strong proficiency with MS Excel and other basic office applications
  • Possesses curiosity, follow-through, and drive
  • Exceptional communication and collaboration skills
  • Strong critical thinking and problem-solving skills
  • Strong organizational abilities and acute attention to detail
  • Flexibility and adaptiveness: ability to adjust to diverse needs as they arise
  • Ability to provide services in alignment with Homeward Bound’s mission, vision, values, and philosophy of service
  • Ability to work effectively both as a team player and with a high degree of autonomy
  • Ability to ably represent Homeward Bound’s core mission

Compensation
$18 hourly
