Under the direction of the Owner and Senior Associates, the Associate Attorney must have the ability to work effectively as a team member while also independently handling an individual caseload. The Associate Attorney must have a strong commitment to achieving excellent results for our clients through intelligent and aggressive advocacy. The Associate Attorney must also have a strong commitment to advocating for those charged with crimes, exceptional work ethic, high motivation, and willingness to work hard to serve our clients. A positive attitude and the ability to work well with a variety of people are a must. The Associate Attorney must be able to negotiate with third-party adversaries such as District Attorneys and potentially claims reps and opposing counsel in auto cases and must demonstrate leadership skills and possess excellent oral advocacy skills, thorough writing skills, with solid negotiation skills.

Criminal Experience is required to apply (either as prosecutor or defense counsel).

The associate attorney is an Exempt position.

Responsibilities

  • Manages an ever-growing caseload
  • Manage full case handling responsibilities from inception through settlement without hand holding
  • Effectively take or monitor statements of clients or third parties
  • Independently handle decision making on a case by case bases
  • Regularly consult with clients, their families, ADA's and other parties as needed to effectively move cases forward
  • Effectively negotiate dispositions/settlements including all aspects of criminal litigation
  • Develop a strategic approach and provide leadership and direction to paralegals and legal assistants
  • Work as part of a team with all levels of experiences
  • Cultivate relationships with the firms existing and future clients
  • Monthly case reviews
  • Confirm vital correspondence is filed appropriately
  • Case review with clients
  • Must be comfortable handling any number of hearings that may be relevant/granted in a criminal proceeding
  • Build client cases, verifying that all client information and documentation is obtained and properly filed
  • Analyze case-specific legal issues and documentation (e.g. supporting depositions; police reports; accident reports, criminal discovery packages)
  • Foster and maintain an excellent rapport with clients through consistent communication and thorough advisement
  • Have the drive and hunger to cultivate and foster a referral network to assist in driving additional leads to firm

Matrix of Tasks

Daily

  • Review daily reminders
  • Review daily, weekly, and upcoming monthly calendar items and prioritize workload
  • Complete tasks
  • Triage and prioritize responses to emails and phone calls
  • Organize, sort, and summarize case information and files
  • Draft letters/reports/ documents
  • Prepare discovery demands and criminal motions
  • Prepare for meetings/court appearances

Weekly

  • Meet with the legal team for case status updates
  • Provide client updates

Monthly

  • Attend Case Status Update meetings and update records
  • Complete monthly new matter goals
  • Complete monthly disposition goals

Qualifications

Be a graduate of an accredited law school and be licensed to practice law for the state in New York. Be in good standing with the NY Bar Association.

Experience in criminal prosecution or defense is a requirement. Be prepared to discuss your experience.

Key Performance Indicators Scorecard

  • Resolve cases within a reasonable time period meeting or exceeding firm goals
  • Meet or exceed the monthly goal for the number of new matters obtained monthly( no less than 3 new cases per month)
  • Effectively manage frequently changing calendar and caseload
  • No more than 3 unplanned absences, late arrivals, or late departures in a 90-day period
  • Network and foster independent referral network to drive added leads to firm

Compensation
$65,000 - $95,000 yearly
